Quick facts on Olympics
Olympic is the biggest sporting
extravaganza in our planet and every time this event is getting bigger and
better. Ancient Olympia was first held in Greece from 776BC to 393AD. After a
gap of more than 1500 years the first modern Olympics was held in Athens,
Greece in 1896. In the year 1920, the Olympic Oath was introduced. Olympic
Torch was first inaugurated in the year 1928. Even though the ancient Olympia
had only male participants, the modern Olympics started including women
athletes. 1900 is the first edition when women started participating in
Olympics to ensure gender equality at the games.
Indian Government Initiatives
As the event gets closer there is
a lot of hype around the event. Every country supports their athletes in the
event vociferously and backs them up to achieve victory. India is no exception
to this and a lot of initiatives have been taken this time around to ensure
India has rich medal haul compare to all the previous editions. Indian
government has taken an initiative by the name “Target Olympic Podium
Scheme(TOPS)” . Ministry of Youth affairs and Sports identified potential
candidates and groomed them for the past 4 years by providing all the required
benefits to help them compete in Olympics with world standards.
India at Olympics
India as a country has the lowest
medal to population ratio in the world. Being the second most populous country
in the world with 1.33billion (As on 2016) population, the country has bagged
just 26 medals in all editions put together till date. India has been more
successful in Men’s hockey and they have won 11 medals overall in this event, 8
of those are gold medals. Beyond Hockey India has just seen sparks of
individual brilliance in one event or the other. 2012 is considered as the best
Olympics for India with 6 medals overall in the event. This is the highest ever
medal tally India has managed to achieve.
RIO 2016
Given all the support which the
Indian government has provided and the tireless effort of all the athletes who
made the Rio mark, high expectations is on the air for Rio Olympics. India is
sporting their largest ever contingent to Rio with 126 sport person
participating in 15 different sports. This is way high compared to the London
Olympics where only 83 athletes represented India. The high nominations are due
to the improved qualification in the field of athletics and Women’s hockey team
getting nominated for their 2nd Olympics after 1980. This is only
the 2nd instance where both men and women Indian hockey team is
participating in the same Olympics. We have also surprise nomination in the
field of Gymnastics for the first time. Dipa Karmakar, a 23 year old Tripura
girl made the Rio mark for the first time ever and made India proud by getting
qualified for the Women’s artistic gymnastic event.
